You should have written “a pair of shoes”. This is why proofreading is so important. When you write something, you also need to proofread it, or allow an expert to do it for you.

There is no such online English grammar tool or spell checker that will be able to pinpoint such mistakes in your text. After all, it is just a computer, and not a human mind reading and interpreting those words.
